Succulent Pumpkins – How to Make Your Own

Succulent Pumpkins at Bauman's Harvest Festival

It’s Harvest Season at the farm, and one of our favorite crafts this time of the year is making succulent pumpkins. Too often, people avoid tropical succulents because they just don’t last that long, and in the fall, you have to throw them away. This is a great option to do something really cool with your tropical succulents.

Watch as Brian Bauman talks about how to create your very own succulent pumpkin.

Typically you are looking for succulents that have a little thicker flesh to them. Echeverias and some Crassulas work great because they tend to hold up better in these succulent arrangements. Then you are going to use cuttings of them to build a succulent pumpkin.

First, start with a nice pumpkin. Make sure there are no holes around the pumpkin or any soft spots because it doesn’t last that long. Once you’ve picked the perfect pumpkin, then you’re going to layer a bed of moss on the bottom. That helps us build up from there. Use a little bit of hot glue to get it stuck in place, and then start working your way up.

Some of our favorites include String of Pearls, Purple Pearl Echeveria, Echeveria Devotion, and one of Brian’s favorites, Pink Butterfly Kalanchoe. It’s this beautiful mother-of-thousands plant. It looks great, and you can even take some of the leaves and poke them in around the outside of the pumpkin. It doesn’t take long and is a fun way to impress your friends.

This is one of the greatest ways that we love to celebrate harvest at Bauman Farms, and our Harvest Festival runs through the end of October. We’re closed on Mondays for the harvest festival activities, but the store is still open. This way, we can get all the maintenance and everything back up and going for the rest of the week: Tuesday through Friday and then Saturday and Sunday. Come on out to the farm; bring your whole family; celebrate the harvest with us. The Harvest Festival doesn’t last long. We look forward to seeing you soon!

  1. Thank you! I have an abundance of succulents. This will be fun.
Hope all my Bauman friends (and former students) are well and happy!
    Blessings to all ❤️

  2. Can you remind me how to care for my succulent pumpkin? Can the succulents be repotted?

    1. Spritz the succulents once a week to moisten the roots. Yes they can be repotted, but make sure there is enough space for the plant to grow.
