Perennial Lobelia – The PERFECT Hummingbird Attracter

Lebelia Perennial - Perfect Hummingbird Attracter

It’s summertime on the farm and there are tons of blooming plants, but oftentimes it’s easy to get confused. For example, there is one type of lobelia that most of us are familiar with. We put it in our hanging baskets, pots, and containers. It trails and blooms all summer, but it’s just an annual. Once the winter comes it’s done. It’s beautiful but doesn’t last forever.

On the other hand, there is a different type of lobelia. We know they look different and have the same name but they are a completely different plant. Both of these are perennials. The red one will go well into freezing during the wintertime. It kind of dies back during the winter and it comes back up in the springtime. It has beautiful red flowers and hummingbirds love it. It’s great for bees and for all of our pollinators. It comes back every single year.

The blue lobelia is brand new this year. It’s a beautiful dark blue color. It’s going to go well into frost perhaps 20 degrees no problem during the wintertime. It’s great for western Oregon. It is great for eastern Oregon too but might be a little harder coming back. It blooms throughout the summer a lot of times. It’s good to pinch them back once the blooms are done so that it keeps re-blooming. It’s a super hardy plant.

Watch as Brian Bauman from Bauman’s Farm & Garden talks about the new perennial lobelia plants on the farm.

We have this hearty lobelia in blue and red right now on the farm.
