Tayberries
What on earth is a tayberry? Out in the berry field just across from the store we’re at the beginning of berry season. Tayberries are actually my mom’s favorite berry to make jam. It’s a cross between a red raspberry and an aurora blackberry and it has the best of both worlds. It has got that kind of raspberry kick with a blackberry finish which almost sounds like we are describing a delicious wine.
Tayberries don’t want to come off the vine very well and they can be really soft and mushy. This means they can’t be machine-harvested, so you won’t see them in very large productions. This is something pretty unique that we have at Bauman Farms and something you’re not going to find anywhere else. This berry is pretty new since about 1979-1980 when it was introduced.
Loganberries
A loganberry is another blackberry-raspberry cross, but it is older. This berry was developed in the 1800s by accident in Scotland. This beautiful berry is delicious. You may have tried this in one of our signature ciders called Loganberry Bauman Cider. These berries look almost exactly the same but the easiest way to describe it is that logan’s look almost a little dusty, like somebody drove by really fast on the gator and dusted the whole row. They taste completely different though. Only the last couple of weeks they have started growing at the farm.
The best way to figure out which one you like the best is to head on down to the farm for the next couple of weeks. We have over a dozen different varieties of berries coming in fresh every single morning.
Watch as Brian Bauman from Bauman’s Farm & Garden talks about the differences between tayberries and loganberries.
I was wondering when you will have the pickles for canning.
We have them right now. Stop by the farm today!
